Sierra Vista High School offers Spanish 1 and Spanish 2 classes to students who need to catch up on credits and complete the courses necessary for entrance into the University of California and California State University systems. Students must pass what are known as a-g requirements, including coursework in a foreign language. Sierra Vista is Whittier Union's only independent study program, providing students a learning community with smaller class sizes and a one-on-one academic approach. Longtime Whittier Union teacher Jerry Serrato has taught Spanish on the campus for the last seven years. The Spanish 2 classes were added to the campus six years ago, allowing students who transfer from a comprehensive high school to Sierra Vista the opportunity to continue on their path for successful admission into a four-year university following graduation.
